Melbourne hot spot Reine & La Rue

This elegant rather large space is one that will take your breath away. From the vast atrium of this heritage listed Melbourne Bank building with its spectacular ceiling to the fabulous cornice work and stained-glass windows. You might think you are in an elegant cathedral. The interior designers have honoured the architecture and given a feel of old-world charm. If you want to be within reach of the who’s crowd in Melbourne and rub shoulders with politicians and celebrities, then Reine & La Rue is where it is at. This is another triumph from the NOMAD group

On first glance when walking up the stairs you are greeted and shown into this coveted dining hall with a seafood bar on your left and long cocktail bar on the far right.

Bring your wallets as this is not a budget French inspired restaurant and not for the feint hearted, lunch for three with paired wines and a three course meal with hors d’oeuvres will set you back in excess of AUD 600 but gosh it will be worth it! They do have set menus with pairing for $180 pp but I like to go ‘off piste’ and select my own paired vintage wines from their Coravin selection. Their sommeliers are knowledgeable and their waiting staff offer a good service.

600g O’Connor dry aged ribeye, pasture fed from Gippsland, VIC.
Loved the open view of the seafood bar

Whether you are a Melbournian or an out of towner visiting this will be a memorable occasion.

My picks are the scallops, kohlrabi and ribeye 600g (good for sharing) however there are many stars on the menu. From the cultured butter that accompanies the baguette to the dessert menu with its hidden surprises such as the Caramelised apple, calvados caramel, buttermilk ice-cream – simply delicious!

The Southern rock lobster cocktail presented well but do tell the chef to ‘hold the salt!’

Book on the outer side so you don’t miss any of the beauty of the room. Watch out when booking you can get locked into reserving the pairing menu keep selecting and you will get there.

They have a little eight seater wine bar across the courtyard at the rear of the ‘Cathedral room.’

Minimum spend of $100 pp

Sunday and Monday are closed.

Address: 380 Collins St, Melbourne, Victoria 3000.
